Best Places Destinations Marin (Best Places)
Published in Paperback by Sasquatch Books (April, 2002)
Author: Joanne Miller
Average review score:

Best All Around Marin Guide
Other guides to Marin may focus entirely on hiking, or biking, or history--this one actually includes all those things, plus reviews of restaurants, places to stay, and things to do (including shopping) that others leave out. Because the book covers a lot of topics of interest to visitors, you'd expect the reviews of hikes and restaurants to be too brief, which isn't the case at all. You'll get to know the county like a native.

The Best Places to Kiss in Northern California: A Romantic Travel Guide
Published in Paperback by Beginning Press (July, 1994)
Authors: Stephanie C. Bell, Elizabeth Janda, Paula Begoun, and Miriam Bulmer
Average review score:

Very useful guide (and not just for kissing)
This book is extremely useful as a general guide for (1) the best places to stay and (2) the best restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area. The title is misleading in that even if romance isn't the goal, the guide is useful in finding a classy place to visit. Explanations that accompany each entry are detailed and points out what's great, what's not great, prices, and everything that you'd want to jot down if you were investigating the place yourself.

Excellent in all respects. I highly recommend it.

The Bidwell-Bartleson Party: 1841 California Emigrant Adventure: The Documents and Memoirs of the Overland Pioneers
Published in Hardcover by Western Tanager Pr (January, 1992)
Author: Doyce B., Jr. Nunis
Average review score:

The Bidwell-Bartleson Party
This is really a fine book. In 1841 a group of westbound immigrants - 30 men, 1 woman, and 1 child - left the Oregon Trail and instead started for California. Their arrival marked the first time an immigrant train had arrived there and is a significant point in both Californian, and by extension, American history.

Nunis's book is a collection of original accounts written by the members of the party, and considering the small group there are surprisingly many. It contains three accounts by John Bidwell, including his diary kept during the journey; an article and letter by Josiah Belden; a brief account by J. B. Chiles; a narrative by Nicholas Dawson; a short account by Charles Hopper; two diaries written by James John; a newspaper account by Nancy Kelsey (the only woman with the party); a letter written by James P. Springer; and an article by Robert H. Thomes. In addition, it contains accounts by Pierre De Smet, Father Gregory Mengarini, Father Nicholas Point, and Joseph Williams, who did not accompany the expedition all the way to California, but did travel with it part of the way.

Appendices include a roster of the members of the expedition, including those who left it at one point or another along the trail; brief biographies of every pioneer who went the whole way to California; and various miscellaneous documents connected with the party. Kudos to Dr. Nunis for collecting all of this information into one book.

Great info on blue whales
I thought this book was enjoyable to read and important in its information about an endangered species. It shows respect for whales and conveys the awesomeness of the blue whale, the largest animal on earth. The illustrations were especially beautiful and made me want to swim underwater.

Published in Hardcover by Texas A&M University Press (March, 2001)
Author: John H. Rappole
Average review score:

One of the best guides I've seen for birds in the Southwest
This book provides color photographs, in-depth descriptions, and migration/nesting habits of many birds in the southwestern US.

Bird species include water birds, birds of prey, hummingbirds, songbirds, etc. that residents or visitors to the southwest may encounter.

The book is very well organized and is useful as a quick reference when viewing birds.
